A continuación mencionamos algunas de las cualidades de la raza dorper (Milne, 2000):
- son resistentes a condiciones climáticas extremas
- rusticidad y adaptabilidad a muchos ambientes
- velocidad de crecimiento, conformación, rendimiento del canal
- los corderos se sacrifican entre los 4 o 5 meses de edad
- raza con mayor resistencia a enfermedades que otras razas de ovejas
- las hembras tienen una larga vida productiva y facilidad de parto
- Son más grandes que la mayoría de las ovejas de lana, pero consumen menos forraje por tamaño metabólico
- la raza tiene forma de barril, no tiene cuernos y pueden ser de cabeza negra o blanca
- ideales para el pastoreo y sistemas de alimentación intensiva (Marca 1992; Schoeman 2000)
- tienen baja tasa de mortalidad
- los dorper son animales de fácil cuidado
- alta capacidad para pastar a temprana edad
- raza de pelo que tiene una mayor capacidad de transformar el forraje a carne
- con el alza de precios en los granos más ganaderos se están dedicando a la producción de ovinos
Origen de la raza dorper: Los borregos dorper se originaron de Grootfontein, Sudáfrica en 1940-1950 a través de la cruza de las ovejas Blackhead persa con Dorset Horn. Las ovejas Dorper prosperan en las zonas áridas y semi-tropicales y son adecuados para zonas con precipitaciones de entre 100 y 760 mm. (Campbell, 2000; de Waal y Combrinck 2000, Milne 2000).
Reproducción:
- peso promedio al nacer: 3,48 kg para los machos y 3,37 kg para las hembras (DAGRIS 2005)
- promedio de ganancia diaria de 243 g; esto asegura una alta calidad del canal (16 kg)
- rápido crecimiento: pueden alcanzar 36 kg de peso a los 3-4 meses de edad
- el peso en los borregos adultos va de los 74 a 136 kg para los machos y de 44 a 102 kg para las hembras (DAD-IS 2005)
- intervalos de parto cada ocho meses
- alto porcentaje de reproducción: 2.25 corderos al año (Campbell, 2000; Schoeman y Burger 1992)
- las ovejas dorper producen una gran cantidad de leche y son buenas madres cuidando a sus crías
- ofrecer a la madre y a las crías suficiente espacio, buen pasto y agua potable
- los corderos Dorper tiene alta susceptibilidad a los parásitos gastrointestinales
Las buenas prácticas de manejo en genética de ovinos incluyen:
- evitar la consaguinidad
- seleccionar buenos animales y descartar animales con problemas reproductivos y/o enfermedades
- usar registros productivos y reproductivos en los predios
- comprar animales libres de enfermedades y genética adaptada a las condiciones del sitio
